PCBA test systems

-by use of advanced electrical tests, data acquisition, and data analysis

During 30 years, we have developed our competencies within functional PCBA testing (FCT). The PCBA test stimulates electrical signals, and the response is measured and analyzed.

We have impressive knowledge and experience of “best practices” in designing and manufacturing stable and durable Turnkey Test Systems based on modular elements. We install test solutions all over Scandinavia but always design and manufacture them in Denmark.

We are pleased to share our knowledge of “Design for Testability of PCBAs” to help you optimize your design for production. We have made several Tips & Tricks videos that might be helpful, or you can give us a call.

A PCBA test system from DSE

When designing and manufacturing a turnkey PCBA test system, we analyze your requirements for:

  • Level of automation and integration into your production line
  • PCBA fixture kit customized to the actual PCBA
  • Test and measurement instrumentation and data acquisition
  • Signal integrity and interacting
  • Software platform and test sequences
  • Safety for operator

Fixtures to go into a PCBA Test Systemtest/dsc_3454_oprenset.jpg

DSE works with various standard PCBA fixture kits from GPS Prüftechnik and ATX.

Consider ergonomics, manual/automatic operations, single/double testing, exchangeable cassettes, turnable tables, RF applications, economy, and interface options when choosing a fixture.

Finding the optimal solution is significant to us, so we customize the fixture to your PCBA and advise about the choice of test probes regarding demands for mechanical size, tip style, spring load and travel, current, frequency, plating, or type of termination.

The PCBA test systems are designed and manufactured according to relevant regulatory requirements, are safe to use, and are delivered with complete documentation and CE certification.

FAQ

What is a PCBA Testing?

PCBA (Printed Circuit Board Assembly) testing is the process of electrically and visually verifying assembled boards to identify any manufacturing flaws, material defects, or design issues following assembly. It ensures that the finished product meets design specifications, functions properly, and is reliable for end users.

Why is PCBA testing Important?

Emphasize that PCBA testing helps catch hidden defects early, prevents customer complaints, reduces warranty costs, and avoids recalls, thereby improving product quality and reliability. Boards can appear good visually but may have electrical issues that lead to failures without proper tests.

Are there different types of PCBA tests?

There are quite a few types of test methods. The most used is the functional test (FCT), but burn-in tests, JTAG Boundary Scan tests, HiPOT tests, and Vision tests are often used. When DSE makes a PCBA test, it is always customized and delivered as a turnkey solution.

Common PCBA Testing Methods

  • Functional Testing: Powers and checks a board’s real operation against specifications—most comprehensive but time-intensive and costly. Highly recommended by DSE.
  • Visual Inspection: Manual or magnified inspection for visible defects, suitable for small batches or prototypes.

  • Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI): Uses cameras and image processing to check for missing parts, polarity errors, and soldering problems.

  • X-Ray Inspection (AXI): Scans for hidden solder defects, misalignments, especially valuable for BGA and double-sided boards.

  • In-Circuit Testing (ICT): Uses a bed-of-nails fixture for electrical connectivity, rapid fault detection on high-volume runs, but less flexible for new PCB designs.

  • Flying Probe Testing: Uses movable probes for flexible, fixture-free electrical testing, best for prototypes and low-volume production.

What should a good PCBA Testing cover?

A good PCBA testing covers:

  • Correct components and placements.

  • Soldering quality (cold joints, bridges, missing solder).

  • Electrical connectivity and absence of shorts.

  • Board functionality under powered conditions.

  • Environmental and stress resistance, where needed.

What test Equipment is the most typical?

The major equipment typical in PCBA test Processes:

  • Functional test workstations

  • Environmental test chambers for burn-in/reliability stress.

  • Magnifiers and microscopes for manual inspection

  • AOI and X-ray inspection machines.

  • ICT and Flying Probe systems.

Other benefits from testing?

Besides the obvious regarding quality, you get a lot of data about your DUT (Device under Test) and also the efficiency in your production. Having specialized software to collect these important informations is usually a part of a DSE functional test system delivery.

What are the limitations of PCBA testing?

No test delivers 100% coverage; combining multiple methods gives better assurance but may affect cost and speed. Your test strategy should match product volume, complexity, reliability needs, and last but not least your budget.
