The purpose of the Scrape Test

A Bidirectional or Unidirectional Scrape Test is performed to assess the durability and adhesion of a material's surface coating by scraping it in both directions, typically at a right angle to a wire's length. This helps evaluate how well a coating withstands mechanical abrasion from multiple angles and ensures it meets safety and reliability standards in its application.

  • Ensures coatings on wires and similar components are resistant to abrasion from different directions, replicating real-world wear and tear.
  • Helps manufacturers confirm that products meet industry standards for longevity, performance, and safety.

How the Test Works

  • The test device scrapes the surface coating by moving in one or two directions, often at right angles to the core material, to fully assess adhesion and resistance to scraping.
  • Bidirectional testing is more rigorous than unidirectional methods, providing a comprehensive view of coating integrity.

  • Common in manufacturing wires, cables, and coated materials used in electronics, automotive, and construction.
  • Ensures products perform reliably under mechanical stresses encountered during installation or usage.

Bidirectional Scrape Tester

Insert it on a device that scrapes the surface of the film coating at a right angle to the wire's length. See datasheet!

Unidirectional Scrape Tester

A specimen of film-coated wire shall be wiped with a clean cloth or tissue, placed in the machine, and straightened by elongating not more than 1%, then put the specimen in the secured clamping jaws and adjust the supporting anvil to contact the backside of the specimen. See datasheet!
